About Cockroaches in Texas

Texas's warm, humid climate makes it one of the most cockroach-dense states in the country. Four species are responsible for the vast majority of infestations in Texas homes and businesses:

  • German cockroaches are the most common indoor species. Small (1/2 to 5/8 inch), light brown with two dark parallel stripes behind the head, they reproduce rapidly and prefer warm, humid environments near food and water — kitchens, bathrooms, and food storage areas.
  • American cockroaches (commonly called "water bugs" or "palmetto bugs") are the largest common species at 1.5 to 2 inches. Reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on the head, they prefer sewers, basements, and outdoor areas but enter homes seeking water during drought. See our dedicated palmetto bugs & water bugs guide for detailed identification of all large roach species in Texas.
  • Oriental cockroaches are shiny, dark brown to black, about 1 inch long. They thrive in cool, damp environments like basements, crawl spaces, and drains. They are less common than other species but produce a particularly strong, unpleasant musty odor.
  • Smokybrown cockroaches are especially prevalent in East Texas. Uniformly dark mahogany-brown and about 1.5 inches long, they are strong fliers attracted to lights at night. They commonly live in tree holes, gutters, and attics.

Signs of Cockroach Infestation

  • Droppings: German cockroach droppings resemble ground black pepper, found in drawers, along countertop edges, and behind appliances. American cockroach droppings are larger, cylindrical with ridged sides.
  • Egg cases (oothecae): German roaches carry purse-shaped tan capsules until hatching. Brown, ridge-shaped egg cases glued to surfaces indicate American or smokybrown roaches.
  • Musty odor: A persistent, oily smell in cabinets, behind refrigerators, or under sinks indicates an established colony. The odor comes from pheromones and fecal matter.
  • Daytime sightings: Cockroaches are nocturnal. Seeing roaches during the day indicates a severe infestation where the population has outgrown available hiding spaces.
  • Smear marks: Dark, irregular streaks along walls and floors near water sources, particularly in humid areas.

Cockroach Health Risks

Cockroaches pose significant health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions. Cockroach allergens — proteins found in their droppings, shed skins, saliva, and body parts — are a leading trigger for asthma attacks in urban environments. The National Pest Management Association reports that cockroaches trigger asthma in approximately 63 percent of homes in the United States.

Beyond respiratory issues, cockroaches mechanically spread bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus by walking through contaminated areas and then across food preparation surfaces and utensils. They can also carry parasitic organisms and contribute to overall allergen buildup in indoor environments.

Cockroach Seasonality in Texas

German cockroaches are an indoor species that remain active year-round in heated Texas homes and commercial kitchens. Outdoor species follow seasonal patterns: American, smokybrown, and oriental cockroaches are most active from April through October, with peak activity during the hottest summer months. American cockroaches commonly invade homes during July and August seeking water during drought conditions. Smokybrown cockroaches swarm toward porch lights and building exteriors on warm, humid summer evenings.

Cockroach Treatment Methods

Gel Bait Applications

Professional-grade gel baits such as Advion and Vendetta are placed in small dots near cockroach harboring areas. Roaches consume the bait and return to their hiding places, where they die. Other roaches feeding on the carcass or droppings receive a secondary dose, creating a cascade effect through the colony. This is the most effective treatment for German cockroaches.

Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs)

IGRs like Gentrol disrupt cockroach reproduction by preventing nymphs from maturing into breeding adults. Used alongside gel bait, IGRs accelerate colony collapse by cutting off the next generation.

Boric Acid and Dust Applications

Boric acid powder applied inside wall voids, beneath appliances, and in cracks and crevices provides long-lasting residual control. Cockroaches walk through the dust, ingest it during grooming, and die within days. Boric acid remains effective as long as it stays dry.

Perimeter Spray Treatment

For outdoor species, professional-grade residual sprays are applied around the foundation, door frames, window frames, weep holes, and utility penetrations. This creates a barrier that kills roaches attempting to enter the structure.

Exclusion

Sealing entry points is critical for long-term cockroach control. This includes caulking gaps around pipes, sealing cracks in foundations, installing door sweeps, screening weep holes, and repairing damaged weather stripping.

Cockroach Prevention Tips

  • Keep kitchens spotless — wipe counters nightly, clean behind and beneath appliances regularly, and never leave dirty dishes out overnight.
  • Fix leaky faucets, pipes, and HVAC condensation lines. Cockroaches need water more than food.
  • Store all food in sealed, airtight containers including pet food and pantry staples.
  • Seal all cracks and gaps around plumbing penetrations, electrical outlets, and baseboards with caulk.
  • Take trash out daily and use garbage cans with tight-fitting lids.
  • Reduce outdoor harborage by clearing leaf litter, mulch, and debris away from the foundation.
  • Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged window screens.
