About Wasps and Hornets in Texas

Texas is home to a diverse population of stinging wasps, many of which build nests on, in, or near residential structures. While wasps play an important ecological role as predators of pest insects and pollinators, their nests near human activity areas pose a real sting risk — particularly for people with venom allergies. Understanding the different species, their nesting habits, and when to call a professional is essential for Texas homeowners.

  • Paper wasps (Polistes species) are the most commonly encountered wasps on Texas homes. They are slender, 3/4 to 1 inch long, with brownish-red or yellow and black markings. They build open, umbrella-shaped nests made of papery material, typically under eaves, porch ceilings, deck railings, window ledges, and inside grills and mailboxes. Paper wasps are semi-social and moderately aggressive when their nest is disturbed.
  • Yellow jackets (Vespula species) are compact, brightly marked yellow-and-black wasps about 1/2 inch long. They are highly social and extremely aggressive, especially in late summer when colony populations peak. Yellow jackets nest underground in abandoned rodent burrows, inside wall voids, in attics, and occasionally in dense ground cover. Their nests can contain thousands of workers and are dangerous to disturb.
  • Mud daubers are solitary wasps that build distinctive tube-shaped mud nests on walls, ceilings, and under eaves. Common species include the black and yellow mud dauber and the organ-pipe mud dauber. Mud daubers are generally docile and rarely sting humans. They are beneficial predators of spiders, including black widows.
  • Cicada killers are large, solitary ground-nesting wasps, up to 2 inches long, with yellow and black markings. They appear in mid-summer when cicadas emerge and dig burrows in lawns, gardens, and flower beds. Despite their intimidating size, cicada killers rarely sting humans — only females can sting, and they do so only when directly handled.

Nest Identification

Paper Wasp Nests

Open, umbrella-shaped or inverted cone structures, typically 2 to 6 inches in diameter, with visible hexagonal cells. Nests are attached by a single stalk to eaves, ceilings, and other sheltered surfaces. Active nests have wasps visibly resting on the comb face.

Yellow Jacket Nests

Enclosed paper nests, often concealed underground or inside wall voids. The only visible sign may be wasps entering and exiting a small hole in the ground or a gap in the wall. Ground nests are easy to accidentally disturb while mowing or gardening. Yellow jacket nests can grow to the size of a basketball and house 1,000 to 4,000 workers by late summer.

Mud Dauber Nests

Tube-shaped or organ-pipe-shaped structures made of dried mud, typically 1 to 6 inches long, attached to walls, ceilings, attic rafters, and porch overhangs. Old nests are often empty and can be safely removed by scraping.

Sting Risks and First Aid

Wasp stings inject venom that causes immediate pain, redness, and localized swelling at the sting site. Unlike honeybees, wasps can sting multiple times. For most people, symptoms resolve within a few hours to a few days with basic first aid: clean the site, apply ice, and take an antihistamine or ibuprofen for pain and swelling.

However, approximately 2 million Americans have diagnosed insect sting allergies, and wasp and bee stings cause an estimated 60 to 80 deaths per year in the United States from anaphylactic shock. Warning signs of a severe allergic reaction include hives or widespread itching beyond the sting site, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or wheezing, rapid pulse, dizziness or fainting, and nausea or vomiting. If any of these symptoms occur, call 911 immediately. People with known sting allergies should carry a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector at all times.

When to DIY vs. Call a Professional

Small, visible paper wasp nests on open eaves or fences can often be safely treated by homeowners using an over-the-counter wasp spray applied at dusk when wasps are less active and all workers have returned to the nest. Stand at least 6 to 8 feet away and spray the nest thoroughly.

Call a licensed pest control professional for: yellow jacket nests (extremely aggressive), any nest inside a wall void or attic, large paper wasp nests (more than 3 to 4 inches), nests in hard-to-reach locations, or if anyone in the household has a sting allergy. Yellow jacket removal from wall voids often requires opening the wall to remove the entire nest and prevent secondary pest issues from abandoned comb.

Treatment Methods

Direct Nest Treatment

Professional technicians apply a fast-acting insecticide aerosol or dust directly into or onto the nest, typically at dusk or dawn when wasps are least active. For ground-nesting yellow jackets, dust formulations injected into the entrance hole are most effective. The nest is then removed once all activity has ceased.

Preventive Perimeter Treatment

Residual insecticide applied to eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, and other common nesting sites in early spring deters queen wasps from establishing new colonies. This is the most cost-effective approach for properties with recurring wasp problems.

Exclusion

Sealing gaps in siding, soffits, fascia boards, and around utility penetrations prevents wasps from nesting inside wall voids and attic spaces. Screening gable vents, soffit vents, and other openings with fine mesh keeps wasps out while maintaining airflow.

Wasp Season in Texas

Queen paper wasps and yellow jackets emerge from overwintering sites in early spring (March) and begin building new nests. Colonies grow throughout spring and summer, reaching peak population in August and September. Yellow jackets become most aggressive in late summer and early fall as the colony matures and natural food sources decline. First hard frost kills active workers, and only newly mated queens survive to overwinter and start new colonies the following spring.

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect eaves, soffits, porches, and outbuildings in early spring and remove small starter nests before colonies establish — a queen alone on a small nest with a few cells is easy to manage.
  • Apply residual insecticide to common nesting surfaces in March before queens begin nest-building.
  • Seal gaps in siding, soffits, and around utility penetrations to prevent wall-void nesting.
  • Keep outdoor garbage cans tightly sealed — yellow jackets are attracted to protein and sugary food waste.
  • Clean up fallen fruit from trees and wipe up outdoor food and drink spills promptly.
  • Avoid wearing floral perfumes and bright-colored clothing during outdoor activities in wasp season.
  • Hang decoy wasp nests on porches and under eaves — paper wasps are territorial and may avoid areas where they perceive an existing colony.

Cost of Wasp Removal in Texas

Simple, accessible nest removal costs $100 to $250. Nests in wall voids, attics, or hard-to-reach locations range from $200 to $500. Yellow jacket ground nest treatment costs $150 to $350. Emergency or same-day service may add $50 to $100 to the base price. Most quarterly pest control programs include wasp nest removal as part of the standard service at no additional charge.
