How to Choose a Licensed Pest Control Company in Texas
Six steps to hire with confidence — whether it's a one-time treatment or an ongoing service plan.
- 1
Verify the TPCL license
Every structural pest control company in Texas must hold a valid Structural Pest Control License (TPCL) issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture. Check the license number and expiry date on the company's directory page, or search the TDA database directly. An expired license is a legal red flag — avoid those companies.
- 2
Match the license category to your problem
TPCL licenses are issued in specific categories: P (general pest control), T (termites), W (wildlife), L (lawn and landscape), C (crack & crevice), S (structural fumigation), and D (wood-destroying organism inspection). Make sure the company's category covers the service you need — not all companies are licensed for all services.
- 3
Read verified reviews — volume matters
A company with 4.7 stars across 800 reviews is a stronger signal than 5.0 stars from 12 reviews. Look for companies with at least 50 reviews and read negative reviews to understand recurring complaints. Texas Bug Slayers displays live Google review counts alongside ratings so you can weigh both.
- 4
Confirm insurance coverage
Ask for a certificate of liability insurance before any technician enters your property. Reputable companies carry general liability insurance (typically $1M per occurrence) and workers' compensation. If a technician damages your property or is injured on-site, you are protected only if the company is properly insured.
- 5
Get at least two to three quotes
Pest control pricing varies widely by treatment method, square footage, pest type, and service frequency. Getting multiple quotes lets you compare scope, not just price — a lower quote may exclude follow-up visits or use fewer product applications. Ask each company for a written treatment plan with the specific methods and products they'll use.
- 6
Ask about guarantees and retreatment policy
Most reputable Texas pest control companies offer a guarantee: if the problem persists between scheduled visits, they return at no extra charge. Ask specifically what the guarantee covers, how long it lasts, and what triggers a free retreatment. Get this in writing before signing any annual service contract.
Texas Pest Control License Categories Explained
The Texas Department of Agriculture issues TPCL licenses in seven service categories. Each company in this directory displays the categories their license covers.
Pest Control
General household and commercial pest management — roaches, ants, spiders, bed bugs, fleas, wasps, and most common insects.
Termite Treatment
Subterranean, drywood, and Formosan termite inspection, baiting, liquid barrier, and fumigation treatments.
Lawn & Landscape Care
Lawn pest control, fire ant management, grub treatment, and landscape protection services.
Wildlife Removal
Humane trapping and exclusion of raccoons, opossums, squirrels, birds, bats, and other nuisance wildlife.
Crack & Crevice Treatment
Targeted pesticide application into cracks, crevices, and voids — commonly used in food-handling facilities and sensitive environments.
Structural Fumigation
Whole-structure tent fumigation, primarily for drywood termites and severe stored-product pest infestations.
Wood-Destroying Organism Inspection
Official WDO inspection reports required for real estate transactions — documents evidence of termites, wood rot, and wood-boring beetles.
