Paper wasps are the architects of the small gray umbrella nests that appear under Texas eaves every spring. The dominant species statewide are the red paper wasp (Polistes carolina) — large and almost entirely reddish — and the common or guinea paper wasp (Polistes exclamans), reddish with bold yellow markings. Identifying Paper Wasps

Paper wasps are slender-waisted, long-legged wasps 3/4 to 1 inch long — noticeably more gracile than yellow jackets, with legs that dangle in flight. Red paper wasps are nearly solid rust-red; common paper wasps add yellow face and body markings. The flight pattern and silhouette (long body, trailing legs) separates them from the stockier, faster yellow jacket at a glance.

The Umbrella Nest

The nest is the ID: an open, single-layer comb of hexagonal cells — shaped like an umbrella or inverted mushroom — hanging from one short stalk, with no paper envelope around it.
