Quick facts — paper wasps in Texas

  • Texas species: red paper wasp (Polistes carolina), common paper wasp (P. exclamans), and relatives
  • Nest: open umbrella-shaped comb on a single stalk — under eaves, porch ceilings, grill covers
  • Aggression: moderate — leave the nest alone and they leave you alone; defend it and they sting
  • Season: queens found nests in spring; colonies peak in summer; queens overwinter in attics
  • Benefit: they hunt caterpillars and garden pests — low-traffic nests can often stay
  • Removal: $100–$250 professional; small new nests can be DIY'd at dusk

About Paper Wasps in Texas

Paper wasps are the architects of the small gray umbrella nests that appear under Texas eaves every spring. The dominant species statewide are the red paper wasp (Polistes carolina) — large and almost entirely reddish — and the common or guinea paper wasp (Polistes exclamans), reddish with bold yellow markings. They are social wasps, but on a small scale: a paper wasp colony is a single open comb with a few dozen wasps, nothing like the thousands inside a yellow jacket nest. For the aggressive species, see our wasp & hornet removal guide.

Identifying Paper Wasps

Paper wasps are slender-waisted, long-legged wasps 3/4 to 1 inch long — noticeably more gracile than yellow jackets, with legs that dangle in flight. Red paper wasps are nearly solid rust-red; common paper wasps add yellow face and body markings. The flight pattern and silhouette (long body, trailing legs) separates them from the stockier, faster yellow jacket at a glance.

The Umbrella Nest

The nest is the ID: an open, single-layer comb of hexagonal cells — shaped like an umbrella or inverted mushroom — hanging from one short stalk, with no paper envelope around it. You can see the cells (and often white larvae in them) from below. Favorite sites in Texas: under eaves and soffits, porch and patio ceilings, behind shutters, inside grill covers and patio furniture, under window frames, and inside equipment like pool pumps and well houses. If the nest is enclosed in a gray paper shell, that is a yellow jacket or hornet nest — a different and more dangerous situation.

Seasonal Cycle in Texas

Fertilized queens overwinter in sheltered spots — attics, wall voids, under bark — and emerge in March and April to found new nests alone. Through summer the colony grows to a few dozen workers that hunt caterpillars and other soft insects to feed the larvae. Colonies peak in late summer, produce next year's queens and males in fall, then die off with the first cold snaps; only the new queens survive to repeat the cycle. That dead winter nest on your eave is empty — scrape it off in winter without any wasp risk.

How Aggressive Are They?

Paper wasps are middle-of-the-road: far calmer than yellow jackets, but not harmless. They ignore people who keep their distance, yet they defend the nest decisively — approach within a few feet, vibrate the structure, or swat at workers, and you can take multiple stings. Nests over doors, decks, grills, and play equipment should be removed. Nests in low-traffic spots can reasonably be left alone — paper wasps are genuinely useful caterpillar hunters in the garden. As with all wasps: anyone with a known sting allergy should never approach a nest.

DIY vs Professional Removal

A small new nest — golf-ball sized, a handful of wasps, easily reached from the ground — is a legitimate DIY job: wait until dusk when wasps are on the comb and sluggish, hit it with a long-range wasp spray, scrape it down once activity stops, and knock down the stalk stub. Wear long sleeves and plan your exit. Never work a nest from a ladder.

Call a professional for nests larger than a fist, nests at roofline height, nests inside equipment or wall voids, and any nest if sting allergy is a factor. Professional removal runs $100 to $250 and typically includes residual treatment of the site so queens do not immediately rebuild. Early spring preventive treatment of eaves and porch ceilings — before nests are established — is the cheapest paper wasp strategy of all. Browse licensed wasp removal companies in your area below.
