Identifying a Cicada Killer

Cicada killers are unmistakable at full size: 1.5 to 2 inches long, with a black abdomen marked by broken yellow-cream bands, a rusty-orange head and thorax, orange legs, and amber-tinted wings. They fly low over lawns in a heavy, deliberate patrol pattern. The males are the ones that buzz your head — they are territorial, bluff-charging anything near their airspace, but they have no stinger and are pure theater.
