USDA Develops NovoFly™ Male-Only Screwworm Strain to Supercharge Eradication Efforts

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has unveiled a genetic breakthrough that could fundamentally alter the fight against New World screwworm, the parasitic fly threatening livestock across Texas and the Southwest. The newly developed NovoFly™ strain produces only male screwworms for sterilization and release, effectively doubling the operational supply of sterile flies available to combat the pest.

Since the first U.S. detection in over six decades, USDA APHIS has been waging an aggressive campaign against Cochliomyia hominivorax, deploying more than 100 million sterile flies weekly across Texas and Mexico. The sterile insect technique works by flooding the environment with sterilized males that mate with wild females, producing no offspring and gradually collapsing the population. Until now, the process required rearing both sexes, with females essentially representing wasted production capacity.

"Since males are key to the process, NovoFly™ will double the operational supply of sterile flies and substantially supercharge our eradication efforts," USDA officials stated in an updated response strategy released July 24.

The innovation arrives at a critical moment. Confirmed screwworm cases have reached 42 across 16 Texas counties and one New Mexico county, with a recent cluster tightening across the Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos regions. The parasite, which lays eggs in open wounds and can kill infested animals within days if untreated, poses a multi-billion dollar threat to the U.S. cattle industry.

USDA's comprehensive response extends beyond genetic innovation. The agency recently completed an $8.5 million sterile fly dispersal facility at Moore Air Force Base in Edinburg, Texas, now deploying over 80 million sterile flies weekly. Construction continues on a domestic production facility capable of generating up to 300 million sterile flies per week by late 2028.

The NovoFly™ development represents one of 40 breakthrough projects funded through USDA's $105 million NWS Grand Challenge, launched to fast-track detection, control, and eradication technologies. Texas A&M University is simultaneously piloting electron-beam sterilization techniques, while the University of Florida evaluates next-generation X-ray irradiators, with results expected before year-end.

For Texas ranchers and livestock producers, the male-only strain offers tangible hope of accelerating containment. Current sterile fly releases have helped prevent the parasite's northward spread beyond the initial detection zones, but eradication requires overwhelming numerical superiority in the field. By eliminating female production entirely, NovoFly™ promises to achieve that threshold faster and more efficiently than previously possible.

The genetic breakthrough also underscores the broader agricultural vulnerability that screwworm represents. Before its 2016 eradication from Florida, the last U.S. screwworm outbreak cost the livestock industry an estimated $1.3 billion annually in control costs and production losses. The current Texas outbreak, while contained, serves as a reminder of how quickly an invasive pest can exploit gaps in biosecurity infrastructure.

USDA continues coordinating with Mexican authorities through the Commission for the Eradication and Prevention of Screwworm, releasing sterile flies across both sides of the border. Mexico's newly inaugurated Metapa production facility, funded with $31 million in U.S. support, will eventually produce an additional 100 million sterile flies weekly.

For now, Texas livestock producers remain under quarantine restrictions in affected counties, with mandatory inspections required for animal movement. The Texas Animal Health Commission and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension continue offering certified inspector training to help producers navigate compliance requirements while maintaining market access.

The NovoFly™ rollout timeline remains under development, but USDA officials indicate the strain will integrate into existing release programs as production scales. For an agricultural industry already weathering input cost inflation and market volatility, the promise of accelerated screwworm eradication offers a rare piece of welcome news from the biosecurity front lines.
