Commodity Fumigation in Texas

Commodity Fumigation in Texas

Commodity fumigation is one of the seven official license categories issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). The "C" category authorizes the inspection and control of pests through fumigation of processed commodities, raw agricultural commodities, and the structures normally used to contain them — grain bins, silos, warehouses, and food-storage facilities. Fumigation of agricultural equipment or commodities located on the farm is excluded from this category.

Commodity fumigation is a distinct credential from Structural Fumigation (S): a company licensed to tent a house is not automatically authorized to fumigate a grain bin, and vice versa. Businesses hiring for stored-product pest work should confirm the C category on the contractor's TPCL.

Typical Commodity Fumigation Work

• Grain elevators, bins, and silos — weevils, grain beetles, and moths
• Food processing and storage warehouses — stored-product pests
• Mill and feedlot facilities — fumigation of commodity-containing structures
• Shipping containers and railcars carrying agricultural commodities

Commodity Fumigation — FAQ

Who needs commodity fumigation services?

Agribusinesses, grain handlers, food processors, and logistics operators storing raw or processed commodities. Homeowners looking for tent fumigation of a house need the Structural Fumigation category instead.

Is commodity fumigation regulated?

Yes. It requires the TDA Commodity Fumigation (C) category on both the business license and the supervising certified applicator's license, along with federal fumigant label compliance and applicator safety requirements.
